This site discusses the different types of atoms. Atoms are like building blocks. This website shows the different types of atoms that surround us. This site breaks down the definitions of molecules, elements, electrons, and much more. This site would be great for teachers to use when explaining to students the basics of atoms. This site includes pictures of the different types of atoms and elements.

Matter consists of everything around you. It is defined as anything that has mass and takes up space. Everything you look at, even yourself is made up of matter. There are small atoms and compounds that make up that matter. Although matter is everywhere, it can only be found in 5 states, or phases. These phases are solid, liquid, gas, plasma, and Bose-Einstein condensate. Matter can change phases by physical or chemical reactions. Physical changes have to do with a change in the environment, like the temperature. Chemical changes have to do with the bonds within an atom and compound being created or destroyed.

The foundation of science is understanding the roots of it, that being matter. All physical objects are made of matter, but what is matter? Matter is anything that takes up space and has volume, but let’s break it down further than that. Matter is broken down where categories of solids, liquids, and gases contain tiny particles of matter. Matter particles in air, and all other gases are invisible to the eye as their particles are much smaller masses compared to that of solids and liquids. The building blocks of matter are called atoms, where there are 118 different types of atoms. A substance consisting of only one atom is called an element. One important method that nature uses to organize atoms is in the formation of molecules, where molecules are groups of two or more atoms that have bonded together. In sum, matter is in everything we see and touch daily, making it the foundation to understand science.

The site Cool Kid Facts includes essential vocabulary words about states of matter that are followed by simple definitions. The article first starts off grasping the readers’ attentions by stating everything is made up of matter. It then breaks down to explaining the importance of understanding molecules and atoms, and puts the words with a kid-friendly definition. The article then separates into sections explaining each state of matter. Each section consists of a definition, examples, and a real life picture for each state of matter. The site also includes information about plasma and beam. After the information, there’s a “Test Your Knowledge” section, where students can be tested on the information they just read to ensure they comprehend it.

Summary: This website is very informative for “young scientists” learning about different scientific terms. There are various tabs at the top of the webpage that link to atoms, matter, elements, the periodic table, reactions, biochemistry, and many topics. I believe that this website is for upper elementary level grade such as 5th grade, and can also be used in the 6th grade level as well. The website is very informational as it breaks down common elements for a student and a teacher learning about this subject matter. For example, the website goes into to detail about how different common elements build together to make molecules. This includes H2O which is 2 hydrogens and an oxygen to make up water. In this resource there are many videos explaining what is being researched on the page. This website like stated previous is very informative but is definitely for the upper elementary as the videos and facts are not “cartoonish,” they are the facts, plain and simple. I would use this website for research for myself as a teacher and maybe navigate it as a class with students together. However, for the elementary level students, I would not feel like it is an appropriate website for individual navigation. This is due to its complexity.

This article is a perfect and easy to understand introduction to an atom. Not only does it introduce an atom as the most basic unit or building block of an element, but it also states that nearly everything in this world both living and nonliving is made up of atoms. The article goes into the structure of an atom and how it is made or protons and neutrons and electrons. It also goes briefly into defining matter and elements. This is a nice article to share as an introduction to chemistry and the atoms, elements, and matter.

This website is a great resource to learn all about chemistry. This website includes information on matter, atoms, elements, the periodic table, reactions and biochemistry. This website is very organized and easy to navigate. Each topic has its own page of information and includes great images. Also the website highlights key words such as “molecules.” If the students are reading about atoms and then they come across the word molecules and they don’t know what it means, the website allows the viewer to click on the word and then the website will direct the viewer to a page to read more about molecules. This website provides great information about chemistry. This website would be appropriate for the grade levels who are beginning to learn about chemistry. This website can also be helpful for teachers who want to learn more about the topic.
