History Alive!: Routes of exploration to the New World

In chapter five of the History Alive! textbook, fourth graders discover  the various explorers of the 15th and 16th century. The introduction of chapter five, discusses the many explorers of the 14 and 1500s and the European countries who funded them. The chapter then starts by discussing the most well-known explorers in history, Christopher Columbus. The text gives as a brief but informative overview of Columbus. This text can be used as an introduction to explorers for fourth graders because it gives a concise but instructional summary of eight different explorers. The textbook also defines important vocabulary such as, colonies, East Indies, conquistadors, Northwest Passage, and contagious diseases.  The book summarizes other explorers such as, John Cabot, Juan Ponce de Leon, Hernan Cortes, Jacques Cartier, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, Henry Hudson, and Robert de La Salle. After reading this chapter, students will have a better overview of some of the most vital explorers in history.
