Answering the question of how the population got so big so fast can be a daunting task. There are dozens of reasons why we have boomed into 7 million people, some of which are hard to talk about with fifth graders. This video from NPR touches on the main points of the population boom. They fully explain why the population stayed low for so long, and how the population exploded so suddenly. The graphics are great visual representations to help people understand the facts they are presenting. To add to these great graphics, the explanations are easy to understand and appropriate for as young as fourth grade. This video is a great way to introduce the topic of population growth, or to start a discussion with students.
