The Sign of the Beaver is an exquisite tale about bridging the cultural gap between Europeans and Native Americans. This historical fiction novel details the relationship between Matt a 12 year old boy and Attean the grandson of the Chief of the Beaver Clan. After completing a cabin with his father, Matt is left alone to defend the lone cabin while his father sets voyage to Massachusetts to pick up the rest of their family. The voyage is supposed to take just over a month but Matt is left alone for longer than that. He soon finds that his supplies are not suited for the extended time period, and he is ill prepared for the unfortunate circumstances that follow. Matt has never been on his own for this long and is manipulated by a stranger who steals his only rifle. Matt also finds the environment to be just as harsh and is nearly killed by a hive of bees until Attean finds him. As a thank you for saving his life Matt agrees to teach Attean English and how to read. The boys are not thrilled with the relationship but eventually form a strong relationship.
