This website includes an image of the average temperature profile through the Earth’s atmosphere. It also describes and defines all of the layers and states that The atmosphere is divided into five layers. It is thickest near the surface and thins out with height until it eventually merges with space. At the end of the article, there’s the option to purchase two related books on the topic, The Earth Scientist, Volume XXV, Issue 3, Fall 2009, and The Earth Scientist, Volume XXVI, Issue 2, Summer 2010.

Earth’s Colorful Atmospheric Layers Photographed from Space

This is an interesting article that focuses on a new image taken by astronauts on the International Space Station shows the different layers of Earth’s atmosphere during sunset over the Indian Ocean. The sequence of colors in the image clearly each of the layers of Earth’s atmosphere, which are visible because the picture was taken while the space station had an edge-on view of the Earth. From the angle the picture was taken, the Earth’s curvature can also be seen. Seeing diagrams is on thing, but an actual picture that clearly distinguishes between the layers is amazing. The article then goes on the describe the different layers of the atmosphere and what they are generally comprised of.

This website includes atmosphere information, facts, news, videos, and photos. Their photography includes incredible photos of earth’s atmosphere, weather infinite photo’s (a mosaic of photos submitted by website visitors), climate photos, and and extreme photos of nature’s fury. It defines and describes in detail the various layers of the earth’s atmosphere in an essay format. It divides the layers into the categories of protective buffer and entering space. There are also links earth’s atmosphere topics such as climate, cloud, weather, and wind for further exploration.

This website includes articles, video’s pictures and facts relating to Westward Expansion. It’s video “Louisiana Purchase Doubles U.S.” is a minute long video detailing how Thomas Jefferson pulls off the land deal of the millennium when he buys 800,000 square miles from the French, stretching from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. It also offers the option The website also include an option “More to Explore” where it offers information on people and groups, themes, events, and related topics. It also offers an Encyclopedia Britannia summary of Westward Expansion and related articles for follow-up research. This extensive and interactive website is a good tool to use for research on a vast range of history topics.

This text uses primary sources throughout her narrative to give readers an introduction to the people who settled the West, the rewards they sought, and the challenges they faced. Each chapter describes a separate place or movement. The Lewis and Clark expedition and early westward expansion tells the stories of women and other groups that are often left out of more traditional histories. It’s well written and each story is interesting and informative. Inside the pages are black-and-white period art reproductions and photos along with maps inside each cover that highlight the places mentioned in each chapter. This book offers more detail and personal perspective about the period of westward expansion.

The Lewis and Clark Expedition

This is an informative picture book that deals with America in the time of Lewis and Clark. There are illustrations on the top left of each article that are a symbol of the times. It focuses on the everyday lives of Americans on the move and uses reconstruction illustrations and photographs along with clear text to bring the story of the Lewis and Clark expedition to life. It gives a clear introduction as to the status of America at the time of the expedition, as well as details discoveries that were made. The yellow boxes tell you what Lewis and Clark were doing at the time and a map is included where you can follow the trails of Lewis and Clark and the Americans who followed them.

This novel can be used as a resource for teaching Westward Expansion or Native American culture. This is a historical fiction adolescent novel on Sacajawea. The book detail her remarkable story, told by Sacajawea herself and by William Clark, in alternating chapters. It details the journey of Lewis and Clark, and the dangers and hardships they encountered along the way. They meet Sacajawea, who becomes their guide and a valuable member of their journey.

It also includes parts of Clark’s original diaries and excerpts from Clark’s and Lewis’s journals as well as traditional Shoshone tales. The whole book is told as collections of stories for Sacajawea’s son, Pomp, who was a favorite of Captain Clark. Their separate characters and backgrounds, American and Indian, shine through their versions of the memorable moments of the voyage to the Pacific Ocean and back.

Why Teach about the Weather?

This website provides a lot of background for teachers and explains why teaching students about the weather is important. There are many links on the site that provide several resources to teachers. There are different lessons plans that teachers can use to teach about seasons, temperature, and weather in different areas. This is definitely a site that beginning teachers should take a look at to get ideas about how to teach weather to students.

Cold Fronts and Warm Fronts

Athough this site is not flashy or interactive, it does provide a lot of useful information about cold fronts and warm fronts. The language used is easy for elementary and middle school students to understand and there is a very detailed photo that students can follow along with and refer back to while they are reading. I think that this would be very useful when teaching fronts to students because it provides a visual so that students are bettera able to understand what causes these systems to occur and why.

This website links the students to a American Civil War time line. With the use of this website students can see the order in which each battle of the war took place. Each main battle is broken down into the significant moments and dates. This could be used as a great tool for students while participating in projects or writing papers.
